SÃO PAULO - A CITY

For many centuries, São Paulo was a very quiet town. This changed radically with the arrival of large numbers of immigrants in the late nineteenth century and migrants in the following. They were attracted by coffee plantations and then by industry and services sector. The city grew and new traditions took root here.

Today, the capital of the state of São Paulo is in addition to an important economic and financial center, one of the main disseminators of trending topics, entertainment and culture of Brazil.

CLIMATE

The climate is tropical of altitude, characterized by summer rainfall and average annual temperature between 19 °C and 27 °C (66 °F to 80 °F). During the summer, the rain tends to fall in the late afternoon, relieving the heat. In autumn, the temperature is mild, averaging around 23 °C (73 °F). Winter usually has sunny days and dry, with temperatures rarely drop below 15 °C (59 °F). In the spring, the days are very hot and dry.

BUS
You can request a “Bilhete Único” card, which entitles you to 4 tickets every 3 hours for a single fare, or pay directly to the collector. In the bus, embark by the front door and disembark by the back door.

SUBWAY
The city currently has five lines: Blue (North / South), Green (Vila Prudente / Vila Madalena), Red (East / West), Lilac (Capão Redondo / Largo Treze) and Yellow (Luz / Butantã).

The service runs daily from 4:40 a.m. to midnight (Saturday until 1 a.m), except the Purple Line, which does not work on Sundays. “Bilhete Único” also makes integration between bus and subway, with a differentiated value.

To Call outside São Paulo: 0 + number of operator + city code + phone number.
International calls: 00 + provider number + country code + area code + phone number. The area code of the city of São Paulo is 11.
To call some cities of the state, which also have code 11, you must dial the operator. Indicate whether the 102.
On newsstands phone cards are sold in 20, 40, 50 and 75 credits. Each credit is equivalent to two minutes of talk time for local calls.

ELECTRICITY

The voltage from the city of São Paulo is 110 volts and 60 Hz, but the main hotels in the city is taken with identification of 220 volts.

TIPS

Hotels: hotels generally include taxes and service the account.

Restaurants: tips are not mandatory but an increase of 10 percent is usually added to the total invoice.

Taxis: taxi drivers do not charge gratuity, but passengers generally pay something more if they are satisfied with the service.

Safety Tips

As in any big city, it is important to consider personal safety. Therefore:

* Pay attention to your luggage *. Use large and colorful labels to identify them easily on the mats at airports or delivery counters.

* Change * money only in exchange offices at airports or authorized banks. Do not accept help from strangers as porters and agents at airports.

* Use only taxi services * in points or officers of the cooperatives indicated by the event organizer. Try to leave the car windows always closed, especially at night and always ask the cab driver to store valuables items, like laptops, in the trunk of the car.

* Keep your belongings * always in your sight, especially in open areas, such as restaurants, bars, squares and even in the environment of the event. Do not leave purses, bags, cameras or video cameras hanging on chairs or on the floor.

Avoid leaving * valuable * jewelry and watches at others’ sight. The same applies to large amounts of money, try to separate the amount previously required for small expenses.

Do not reveal your personal details to strangers and avoid carrying passports and * Travel checks * for tours. In case of loss or theft, report the incident immediately to local police.
