IX.br is the name given to the Internet Steering Committee project in Brazil (CGIbr) which promotes and creates the necessary infrastructure
(Internet Exchange Point / IXP) for direct interconnection between networks ("Autonomous Systems" - ASs) that make up the Brazilian Internet.
The performance of IX.br is focused on metropolitan areas in the country that have great interest of Internet traffic exchange.
One of the main advantages of this model is the rationalization of costs, since the traffic balances are resolved directly and locally and not through third-party networks, often physically distant.
Another major advantage is the greater control that a network can have regarding the delivery of their traffic as close as possible to their destination, which usually results in better performance and quality to their customers and more efficient operation of the Internet as a whole.
A IX.br is thus an interconnection in metropolitan area network interconnection points (pixes), commercial and academic under centralized management.
Below is a graph that represents the aggregate traffic of all IX.br that are currently in operation.

Are key Features for the proper implementation of a IX.br:
- Neutrality - independence from commercial providers
- Quality - efficient exchange of traffic
- Low cost alternative with high availability
- Unique matrix for regional traffic exchange
The coordination of IX.br, in charge of CGIbr, and operation by technically qualified organizations,
but non-profit that will establish the architectural requirements and management of interconnections,
guarantee the first two topics.
The hosting of pixes in commercial facilities with high standards of security and infrastructure,
adding to existing traffic matrices, is a condition for obtaining the other above requirements.
The following metropolitan areas with characteristics have been identified to host a IX.br:

AS |
Autonomous System is a set of networks with same routing policy. |
